Cotton, is the seed fiber of the mallow family (Malvaceae) cotton (Gossypium) plant, native to the subtropics. The plant is shrubby and can grow up to 6 meters tall in tropical cultivation, usually 1 to 2 meters.
The flowers are creamy white, turning dark red shortly after flowering and then fading, leaving a small green capsule called a cotton boll. Inside the boll are cotton seeds, which have velvet hairs that grow out from the epidermis and fill the inside of the boll, which splits open at maturity to reveal the soft fibers. The fiber is white or white with yellow, about 2 to 4 cm (0.75 to 1.5 inch) long, containing about 87 to 90% cellulose, 5 to 8% water, and 4 to 6% other substances. The countries with the highest cotton production are China, the United States, and India.
Annual herb, 0.6-1.5 m tall, branchlets sparsely hirsute, leaves broad-ovate, 5-12 cm in diameter, subequal or wider in length and width, base cordate or cordate-truncate, often 3-lobed, rarely 5-lobed, middle lobe often deeply divided to half of the blade, lobes broadly triangular-ovate, apex abruptly acuminate, base broad, subglabrous above, hirsute along veins, sparsely villous below; petiole 3-14 cm long and sparsely pilose; stipules ovate-falcate, 5-8 mm long, caducous.
