Organic cotton is really organic? And is the traceability system really reliable?

In 2022, one of the world's largest organic cotton certification body Control Union has temporarily withdrawn from the Indian market, no longer certified organic cotton produced in the country. And earlier in 2020, the organic cotton certification body from Germany, "Global Organic Textile Standard" (GOTs) claims that about 20,000 tons of Indian cotton was wrongly certified as organic cotton, accounting for about one-sixth of India's total organic cotton production.
According to foreign media reports, the actual global production of organic cotton, and brands claim that there is a significant gap between the amount used in their finished products. Organic cotton traders pointed out that they are from cotton farmers, yarn mills and garment manufacturers to obtain the data show that the vast majority of consumers buy organic cotton products, does not use organic cotton. According to the survey, it is difficult to estimate the severity of the problem of false label organic cotton, because in the global ranking of the top 100 garment manufacturers, only about one-third of the supply chain traceability, and in these traceability of manufacturers, half of them only collect supplier-related information, not isotope analysis and other related testing.
According to Indian media reports, the Indian Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare held a meeting last week, said that in order to promote Indian cotton and textile exports, the country will specify a new certification system for organic cotton. A local trader said that the current Indian organic cotton certification mainly relies on the "Global Organic Textile Standard" (GOTs), the establishment of independent certification system will help to further promote organic cotton cultivation in the country, and promote the development of downstream textile industry.
